Stop drain smells drifting back into the room with a floor drain odour seal core that sits quietly out of sight and does the work for you.

A removable silicone and plastic insert that drops into a standard 3.5 cm drain groove, closes after the water passes, and helps keep odours, insects and backflow where they belong.

A removable drain core that sits inside your existing floor waste and closes when water is not running.

Built from plastic and silicone in a transparent finish, so there is no metal to rust or corrode over time.

Designed for drain grooves around 3.5 cm, with a 5.3 cm wide by 5.3 cm high body.

The whole core lifts out in seconds for rinsing, which makes hair and soap build-up easy to deal with.

Supplied as a pack of two, so a spare is ready for a second drain or a straight swap later on.

Floor Drain Odour Seal Core, 2 Pack

Floor wastes are one of those parts of a home nobody thinks about until something smells wrong. The drain itself is just a hole in the floor leading to a pipe, and if the water barrier in that pipe dries out or the fitting is shallow, air travels the wrong way. You get a faint sour note in the bathroom that air freshener never quite covers. This floor drain odour seal core is a small insert that drops into the drain and adds a closing valve between the room and the pipe.

Floor Drain Odour Seal Core, 2 Pack

The core is built from plastic with silicone sealing parts, in a transparent finish. There is no steel in the moving section, which matters in a space that is wet most of the day. Metal flaps can pit and seize over time. A silicone valve stays flexible and keeps moving with the water instead of fighting it. The maker lists the material as plastic and silicone, and the colour as transparent, so it tends to disappear under a standard grate.

Floor Drain Odour Seal Core, 2 Pack

Fitting is about as simple as this kind of job gets. The core measures 5.3 cm wide by 5.3 cm high and is made for a drain groove of roughly 3.5 cm, so it pushes down into the throat of the waste rather than sitting on top of the tiles. Lift your existing grate, clear anything loose from the opening, press the core in, then put the grate back. Nothing is glued or screwed, which is exactly what you want when it comes time to clean.

Cleaning is the part people skip with floor drains, usually because reaching into the hole is unpleasant. With a removable core you pull the insert out, rinse it under the tap, and the hair and soap film come away with it. A few minutes every few weeks is enough in a shower. Laundry drains generally need it less often, though lint can gather faster than you expect if a washing machine discharges nearby.

You get two cores in the box. That is handy for a couple of reasons. Most homes have more than one floor waste, so a bathroom and a laundry can both be sorted in one go. If you only need one right now, the second sits in a drawer as a replacement for whenever the first one has had enough. Silicone parts in wet areas are consumables, and having the spare already on hand removes the annoying gap between noticing a problem and fixing it.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

A drain part has to fit the drain you have, and you cannot always judge that from a photograph. If you are a consumer in the EU, you have 14 days from the day you receive it to withdraw for any reason under the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU, and a further 14 days to send it back. You may handle and inspect a product as you would in a shop. If it has been used beyond that, we may reduce the refund to reflect the loss in value. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery, and you pay the direct cost of return.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The two-year legal guarantee of conformity under Directive (EU) 2019/771 covers you, and we pay the return postage. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a floor drain odour seal core?

It is a small insert that sits inside the throat of a floor drain, under the grate you can see. It contains a valve that lets water pass down and then closes again. The idea is to put a physical barrier between the pipe and the room.

How does the seal actually work?

Water pressure pushes the silicone valve open as it drains, and the valve returns to the closed position once the flow stops. Because the closing part is flexible silicone rather than rigid metal, it can sit flush without needing a tight machined fit. There are no batteries or electronics involved.

Will it fit my drain?

It is made for a drain groove of about 3.5 cm, and the core body measures 5.3 cm wide by 5.3 cm high. Lift your grate and measure the opening before ordering. If your waste is noticeably wider or narrower than that, this is not the right core for it.

How many are in the pack?

Two. Each box contains a pair of cores, which covers two drains or leaves you a spare for later.

What is it made from?

Plastic and silicone, with a silicone finish on the sealing parts. The maker gives the colour as transparent. The maker does not state other material.

Does it rust?

The parts listed are plastic and silicone, so there is no steel in the core to rust. That is one of the main reasons people choose a silicone backflow preventer over an older metal flap design in a constantly wet space.

Can I install it myself?

Yes, in most cases. You lift the existing grate, clear the opening, press the core into the drain groove, then replace the grate. No tools, sealant or plumber are needed for a standard fitting.

Do I need to remove my existing grate permanently?

No. The core sits below the grate, so the grate goes straight back on top once the insert is in place. The visible finish of your floor does not change.

Will it slow down how fast my shower drains?

Any insert adds a small restriction compared with a completely open pipe. In normal use the valve opens with the water flow and drains at a rate most people do not notice. If your drain was already struggling before fitting, clear the pipe first.

How often should I clean it?

In a shower, every few weeks is a sensible rhythm, since hair and soap gather quickly. In a laundry or balcony drain, every couple of months is usually enough. Clean it sooner if water starts pooling.

How do I clean it?

Pull the core out by hand, rinse it under warm water, and wipe or brush off anything stuck to the silicone. Mild dish soap helps with soap scum. Let it drain, then push it back into place.

Can I put it in the dishwasher?

We would not. Stick to hand washing under the tap with mild soap, which is quicker anyway and avoids exposing the silicone to high heat cycles and strong detergents.

Does it stop insects coming up the drain?

A closing valve puts a barrier where there was an open pipe, which is the practical approach to a drain insect barrier. It cannot guarantee anything about your specific plumbing, but a sealed drain is far less inviting than an open one.

Will it help with backflow?

The valve is designed to close against flow coming the wrong way, which is what a backflow preventer is for. It is not a substitute for a proper plumbed non-return valve in a system with real pressure problems. Speak to a plumber if you have had serious backflow events.

Why does my floor drain smell in the first place?

Usually the water seal in the trap below has dried out, or the drain fitting is too shallow to hold one. Once that water barrier is gone, air from the pipe travels straight up into the room. An anti odour drain insert adds a second barrier that does not depend on standing water.

Will it work if my drain has no trap at all?

It gives you a closing seal where there was none, which is exactly the situation it was designed for. It will not perform the full job of a plumbed trap, but for everyday odour control in a dry-trap drain it is a sensible fix.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

Yes. Bathrooms and shower floor wastes are the most common place for this type of core, because they are where odours are most noticeable and where hair collects.

Can I use it in a laundry?

Yes. Laundry floor wastes handle washing machine discharge, so check the core after a few wash cycles to see how much lint is gathering. A removable core makes that check easy.

What about a balcony or outdoor drain?

It can be used wherever the drain groove matches the 3.5 cm size. Outdoors you may need to clear leaves and grit more often, since debris that never enters a bathroom will land on an open balcony.

Is it safe around children and pets?

The core sits below the grate, so there is nothing exposed for small hands or paws to grab. Keep the spare core out of reach, as with any small household part.

Does it come in other colours?

The colour listed for this product is transparent. The maker does not state other colour options.

What are the exact dimensions?

The core is 5.3 cm wide by 5.3 cm high, and it suits a compatible groove diameter of 3.5 cm. Depth beyond those figures is not specified by the maker.

How much does it weigh?

A shipping weight is not specified by the maker. It is a small moulded plastic and silicone part, so the pack is light.

Is there a warranty?

No warranty term is stated for this product. If anything arrives damaged or faulty, contact us and we will sort it out.

How long does one core last?

That depends on water quality, cleaning habits and how much hair and grit it handles. Silicone sealing parts in wet areas are consumable items, which is part of why the pack includes two.

When should I replace it?

Replace it when the silicone no longer returns fully to the closed position, when it is torn, or when cleaning no longer stops smells returning. Swapping in the spare core takes a few seconds.

Does it need any sealant or plumbing tape?

No. It is a press-in insert that relies on the fit inside the drain groove, not on adhesive. That also means you can take it straight back out.

How is it delivered?

It ships as a small parcel from our standard fulfilment network. Delivery times vary by country, and the timeframe for your address is shown at checkout.

Would this make a sensible gift?

It is a practical gift rather than a glamorous one, and it suits anyone who has just moved into an apartment or an older house with a drain problem. Pairing it with a drain brush or a cleaning kit makes it feel more like a present.

What if it is not right for my drain?

If the size does not suit your waste or you are not happy with it, contact us within the returns window with your order number. Unused items in their original packaging can be returned under our standard returns policy, and we will help you work out whether a different drain accessory is a better match.

How To Choose A Floor Drain Odour Seal Core That Actually Works

6 min read Drains Company

The smell nobody can find

There is a particular kind of bathroom smell that has no source. The towels are clean. The bin is empty. You have scrubbed the tiles. And still, when you walk in first thing in the morning, something sour hangs in the air for a second before it fades.

Nine times out of ten it is the floor drain.

A floor waste is the small grate set into the tiles, usually in the shower area or near it. Below that grate there is meant to be a water barrier, a small amount of standing liquid that blocks air from the sewer line coming back up. In a lot of homes that barrier is either very shallow or has dried out completely, especially in a guest bathroom or a laundry that is not used every day. Once it is gone, the pipe is simply an open channel into your room.

That is the problem a floor drain odour seal core is built to solve. It is not a cleaner and it is not a fragrance. It is a physical barrier you drop into the drain.

How a seal core works

Think of it as a one way door.

The core sits inside the throat of the drain, underneath the grate you can already see. Inside it there is a flexible silicone valve. When water runs, the weight and pressure of that water push the valve open and it drains away. When the water stops, the valve returns to its closed position and the opening is covered again.

Because the moving part is silicone rather than metal, it does not need a precise machined seat to work. Flexible material can close against a slightly imperfect surface, which is useful in a drain that has seen a few years of mineral deposits and soap film. It also will not rust. Older designs often used a hinged metal flap, and in a wet space those flaps tend to pit, stiffen and eventually stick half open.

This particular core is listed as plastic and silicone with a transparent finish, so once the grate is back on top, you will barely know it is there.

Who this suits

Apartment dwellers notice drain odours more than anyone, because floor wastes in apartments often connect to shared stacks and the air pressure in those stacks changes every time a neighbour runs a bath. If you get a smell that comes and goes with no obvious pattern, that is often why.

Older houses are the second common case. Renovations change pipe runs, and a waste that was fine in 1975 may now sit at the end of a line that never holds water.

Then there are the seasonal homes, the holiday units, the spare bathroom nobody uses between visits. Any drain that goes a fortnight without water will lose its trap seal to evaporation. A closing valve does not rely on standing water, so it keeps doing its job while the house is empty.

It also appeals to anyone dealing with insects. Drain flies and small crawling insects use open pipes as a highway. Putting a closed valve in the way removes the easy route. That is the honest way to think about a drain insect barrier. It does not exterminate anything, it just takes away the door.

Measuring before you buy

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that causes returns.

Lift your grate. Most lift straight out, though some have a single screw holding them. Look down into the opening and measure across the middle of the groove where the insert will sit. This core is made for a groove of roughly 3.5 cm, with a body measuring 5.3 cm wide by 5.3 cm high.

If your opening is close to that, you are in good shape. If it is significantly wider, the core will sit loose and the seal will not do much. If it is narrower, it simply will not go in. Floor wastes are not standardised across every market, so five minutes with a tape measure saves a lot of frustration.

Also check the depth available below the grate. There needs to be enough room for the core to drop in without the grate sitting proud of the tiles afterwards.

Fitting it

The installation is genuinely simple.

Take the grate off. Clear out whatever has gathered in the opening, which in a shower usually means a fairly grim handful of hair. A gloved hand or a bent piece of wire does the job. Give the inside of the opening a wipe so the core is pressing against a clean surface rather than a layer of slime.

Push the core down into the groove until it seats. Run some water to check it drains properly and that nothing is catching. Then put the grate back on top.

No glue, no tape, no tools. That matters, because the whole point of a removable core is that you can take it out again next month.

Keeping it clean

Here is the honest part. A drain insert does not eliminate cleaning. It relocates it.

Everything that used to disappear down the pipe now gathers on top of the core instead. Hair, soap film, shampoo residue, lint from the washing machine. The good news is that it is all sitting in one place where you can lift it out, rather than coating the inside of a pipe where you cannot reach.

A rinse every few weeks keeps a shower drain happy. Pull the core out, run it under warm water, work an old toothbrush around the silicone if there is a film on it, then put it back. Mild dish soap is fine. Skip the solvents and the abrasive pads, since scratching the silicone gives residue something to cling to.

Laundry drains usually need less attention, but check after a few wash cycles to see how much lint is collecting. Balcony and outdoor drains need more, because leaves and grit arrive from outside.

If water starts pooling around the drain, that is your reminder. It almost always means the core needs a rinse, not that it has failed.

Why two cores

The pack contains two, which is more useful than it first sounds.

Most homes have more than one floor waste. A bathroom and a laundry, or two bathrooms. Doing both at once means you are not chasing the same problem twice.

If you only have one drain, the second core becomes the replacement. Silicone parts in a constantly wet environment are consumables. They stay flexible for a long time, but eventually the valve softens or a small tear appears and it stops closing cleanly. When that happens you want a spare in the drawer, not a two week wait for a delivery while the smell comes back.

What it will not do

Worth being straight about this.

A seal core is not a plumbed non return valve. If you have had actual backflow events, with water pushing up through the floor, that is a plumbing issue and a drain insert is not the fix. Call a plumber.

It also will not clear a blocked pipe. If your drain was slow before you fitted anything, it will still be slow afterwards, and you may blame the core unfairly. Clear the blockage first, then fit the insert.

And it will not help with smells coming from a basin or a sink, which have their own traps and their own problems.

The short version

If your bathroom or laundry has a drain smell you cannot track down, the floor waste is the first place to look. An anti odour drain insert adds a closing silicone valve where you currently have an open pipe, and it does that without any plumbing work.

Measure your drain groove first and check it is near 3.5 cm. Fit the core under your existing grate. Rinse it every few weeks. Keep the second core for when the first one has done its time.

It is a small thing. It also happens to be one of the cheapest fixes for a problem that quietly affects how a whole room feels.
